General John Buford commanded the First Division of the Cavalry Corp of
the Army of the Potomac, and on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, he
deployed his men in a wide arc to protect the west and north of town. His
maneuvers kept the town in Union hands until reinforcements could arrive,
and he is a key figure in the Union victory at Gettysburg.
