General Nathan Bedford Forrest, a cavalry officer, was one of the most audacious generals of the Confederacy. He did not have any formal military training, but fought a guerilla war with such skill he was known as The Wizard of the Saddle. He had a gift for new tactics and strategy which became the template for cavalry to move quickly and effectively. He explained his military philosophy by saying, “Getting there firstest with the mostest,” and according to a friend of Grant’s, he was the “only Confederate cavalryman of whom Grant stood in much dread”.
